Lymphatic therapy / MLD vs standard massage

Not simply lighter. Fundamentally different.

How MLD differs from
standard massage.

The difference is not simply lighter pressure. MLD is organized around a different objective, tissue environment and method of touch.

The comparison at a glance

Different objective.
Different tissue. Different touch.

Standard massage

Muscular or relaxation focus

  • Often works more directly with muscles and soft-tissue tension
  • Pressure may range from light to deep, depending on the goal
  • Sequence may follow muscles, regions or a named massage style

Manual lymphatic drainage

Calibrated, directional and sequenced

  • Calibrated pressure at the skin and superficial tissue
  • Movements follow relevant lymphatic pathways
  • Measured pace and deliberate sequence organized around lymphatic movement

The HUMAN difference

Personalized, women-centred and consent-led

  • One core method, adapted to the person and purpose
  • Areas, order, pace, pressure, positioning and focus may change
  • Delivered privately in the client’s home

One is not automatically better than the other. The question is what kind of support your body needs.

The purpose changes the touch.

Standard massage often begins with muscles, relaxation or general soft-tissue tension. MLD begins with the lymphatic system, superficial tissue and the movement of fluid through tissue spaces.

That different purpose changes the pressure, anatomical direction, order, pace and overall experience of the work.

PRESSURE
MLD

Carefully calibrated, skin-focused movement appropriate to superficial lymphatic structures.

Standard massage

May range from light to deep depending on the style and goal.

DIRECTION
MLD

Movements are directed intentionally along relevant lymphatic pathways.

Standard massage

Often follows muscles, regions or a relaxation sequence.

SEQUENCE
MLD

Each area is approached in relation to what comes before and after it.

Standard massage

The order may follow a massage style, muscle groups or the practitioner’s routine.

PACE
MLD

Measured, repetitive and deliberately paced.

Standard massage

Varies widely by practitioner, style and objective.

EXPERIENCE
MLD

Often described as subtle, quiet and deeply settling.

Standard massage

May feel muscular, soothing, vigorous or restorative.

It is not about one being universally better

The more relevant method depends on what the woman is seeking.

A woman seeking deep muscular pressure or a familiar relaxation massage may prefer a standard massage appointment.

A woman experiencing swelling, heaviness, fluid-related fullness, tightness, or a body that does not respond well to force may want to explore MLD.

HUMAN does not ask the client to diagnose herself. Roxanna checks fit before the appointment.

Still deciding?

Tell Roxanna what you are experiencing.

She can help determine whether MLD or another next step appears more appropriate.
